Fuel Is the Biggest Bill on the Boat: Price Certainty for Commercial Fishing

Every commercial fisherman runs the same calculation before leaving the dock: what the trip should bring in against what the trip costs to make. Bait, ice, crew shares, and fuel, and fuel is the number that moves. A day boat working nearshore grounds burns real diesel every trip, and a small operation running through a season, with a truck hauling catch and gear on top of the boat itself, lands comfortably in the range of several hundred to a few thousand gallons a month. That is small enough that no fuel dock treats you like a fleet account, and large enough that a bad price month takes a visible bite out of the season.

The cruel part is that the fisherman controls neither side of the squeeze. Ex-vessel prices are set at the dock when the catch comes in. Fuel prices are set by a market that has never heard of your permit area. When fuel climbs and the dock price does not, the difference comes out of the crew's pockets, trip by trip, and the only lever left is fishing harder for thinner margins.

Fixing the one input that can be fixed

A short term fits a defined season. If your fishery gives you an intense stretch, quote a 1 or 3 month agreement before it opens, sized to the gallons you expect the season to burn. Fishermen already make this estimate every year when they plan the season's costs; the quote simply turns that estimate into a bounded number instead of an open guess. Prepay the gallons, fish the season, and the fuel line on the settlement sheet stays where you planned it.

A longer term fits the operation that works most of the year. Boats that move between fisheries, operations that fish one season and haul or tender another, and anyone with year-round shoreside running can put a 6 or 12 month agreement under the whole cycle. One locked maximum, one prepaid balance, and the winter's truck fuel is covered by the same agreement as the summer's.

What your number looks like

There is no rate card. Every quote is computed at the moment you request it, from current fuel prices in your coverage area, your fuel type, your monthly volume, and your term length. A quote requested in your harbor town this week and one requested next month will differ, because each reflects the market when you asked. That is the honest way to price fuel, and it is also why the only meaningful answer to "what would my price be" is your own quote.

Requesting one takes about a minute: fuel type, a realistic monthly gallon figure from last season's records, and the area where you buy fuel. Diesel and gasoline are quoted independently if you burn both, so the boat's diesel and a gas outboard or pickup each get their own real number.
